I cannot think of any book in the New Testament which is more relevant in times like these than 2 Timothy. Of course, all scripture is useful (2 Timothy 3:16), but there is something about these parting words from Paul that apply very specifically to what we are experiencing in our world today. His letter is filled with encouragement, both individual and corporate, but also contains dire warnings of harder times to come. Paul was a realist. He didn’t sugar coat the message of the gospel, or the difficulties in bringing it to the world. Rather he makes it clear that those who follow in his footsteps and in the footsteps of Jesus will suffer. However, the letter of 2 Timothy is literally drenched in love; love for God and the lifesaving message of God, and love for God’s people. Paul’s parting thoughts were not about the fact that he was destined to die a martyr’s death, but rather about those whom he loved who would be left behind to carry on with the work of Christ.
